Old Sawmill Homestead
Ten years ago we began building our dream home. We had just two children and thought we would spend the rest of our days here. As we worked on the home, our family continued to grow. Now our dream home is feeling a little tight around the edges. We could complete the basement and add more bedrooms but we have found our dreams are changing and we would like to buy a small farm and add to our four legged family. It has been a long slow process. We work mostly in the summer when we aren't homeschooling and summers are never long enough. These pictures are from the last year. As you will notice, some of them include shots of the old flooring, or construction during the process. As I finish my fall cleaning (the first week of November was scheduled to clean all carpets so the house is rather torn up as we are doing that this morning!) I will replace some of the old photos with new ones.
The house was moved to the property in 1996. It was an old farm house that had been built in 1886 over by Piedmont. We set it down on a new basement and spent the winter of 1996/1997 stripping the house down to the studs and starting over. All wiring, plumbing, and insulation was replaced, new sheet rock was added and most windows replaced. Over the next few years we completed a bedroom in the basement. This last winter we finally found ourselves seeing the end of the renovations. We finished the upstairs bathroom with a new vanity and sink, completed the tile surround and added additional cupboard space. We added a bathroom to the bedroom downstairs and completed a walk in closet. We re-arranged the kitchen, put in new cabinets and counters. The house, with exception of two bedrooms and the office, was repainted. New flooring was put into every room. Well, I didn't put it in the office, I love the antique wood floors in there.
The house as it is now has three large bedrooms. The two on the upper level are 11x17 each. These rooms are each big enough to put in two queen size beds and still be comfortable. The Master bedroom suite is in the walkout basement and is 20x20. It is light and airy with a 4x4 window and built in bookshelves. All three bedrooms have new carpeting.
The kitchen is 20x20 and includes a large pantry area, four large windows and a new dishwasher. I chose vinyl flooring for easy upkeep and warmth. We have entertained a lot in this kitchen. I can easily fit two large tables sitting over 30 people.
The property is fenced into three areas and is 1.67 acres. A large back pasture, a side play area for children and our dogs and an open area for front lawn. There is a 10x30 barn/shed in the back pasture. It is home to our goats, geese and chickens but could be used for storage or horses. We have a garden area in the side yard and I think we have finally convinced the deer to let us keep our produce.
